What is Smart Heating?

7 October 2021 | Lightwave

A smart heating system allows you to regulate your central heating using a combination of smart devices and a simple application on any internet-connected device. Effectively, by introducing smart heating into your home, you create a system that operates intelligently and autonomously. It opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to design a heating system to fit into your lifestyle and daily routine at the touch of a button, anytime and anywhere.

Reduce your household expenditure.

The most practical way of applying smart home technology is to turn devices off when not in use. It is so easy to forget that you have left the bathroom window open after a shower while the heating is still on. By utilising the Intelligence  of smart heating, you can save money on wasted heat. For example, if a window is open, the heating can be automatically turned down when a radiator valve is grouped with a magnetic trigger.

Movement sensors can detect when a room is currently occupied. This gives you the option to warm up the occupied room for comfort. The critical advantage of saving energy using smart heating is that you’re not restricting your daily needs. By utilising smart automation devices to work in conjunction with your lifestyle, power is only consumed when necessary. The result is lower bills and fewer emissions for your home.

Increase your energy efficiency

Energy monitoring is automatically built into the system and displayed within the Lightwave App. You can view the energy consumption of each individual smart device  in real-time. As a bonus, the energy consumption of the previous seven days can also be reviewed. Specific energy tariffs can be entered into the App to provide a representational cost of the energy used.

By applying ‘routines’ into your smart heating schedule, you’ll only be using power when you need to, lowering both your energy bill and carbon footprint. A fantastic way to harness the power of smart heating is to incorporate geofencing, which is usually offered by advanced smart heating systems. The idea of geofencing is to trigger your smart devices based on your current proximity to your home. By setting up a simple command, you can schedule the heating to come on 15 minutes before you arrive home from work. This leads to the winning combination of returning to a comfortable house while not wasting energy whilst stuck in traffic.

Be reactive via the Lightwave App.

You can use the heating section of the Lightwave App to monitor, control and schedule any connected Lightwave heating devices, including boiler and radiator control. Using the App on your smartphone or tablet, you can monitor and set the temperature at home in real-time from anywhere. You can set your heating to come on 15 minutes before you wake up, warm your towels in the bathroom each morning before your shower and turn off the heating just after leaving for work. By programming in specific automation, you can make sure that only the radiators in occupied or soon to be active rooms are switched to provide that perfect ambient temperature, as and when you want.

Manage your schedule with ease.

Using the convenience of the Lightwave App, you can easily create and engage with ‘moods’ or ‘scenes’. For example, you are entertaining – set the smart thermostat to automatically heat the dining room to the perfect temperature before your guests sit down to eat. At night, when the entire household is ready to sleep, turn down the heating at the touch of a button.

So what do you need to incorporate Smart Heating into your home?

There are just three Lightwave products needed to bring the incredible convenience of smart heating into your world:

The L92 Lightwave Smart Heating Switch is a brand new addition to the Lightwave collection. It allows universal switching of any load up to 3680W (16A) rating. When paired to the Link Plus hub, the Smart Switch becomes part of your Lightwave system. It is easy to programme any automation within the Lightwave system to adjust the heating in any room for a given period.

The Honeywell Home Radiator Valve (Model HR91) allows you to save energy whilst increasing comfort by customising temperatures room by room. Each valve can be screw-fitted to a radiator in seconds without requiring any plumbing or special tools. It allows you to control your heating by setting precise temperatures and scheduling routines to fit your needs.

The Honeywell Home Wireless Thermostat (Model DTS92E) can trigger any Lightwave device based on a room’s current or target temperature. Utilising this thermostat in conjunction with the Lightwave L92 Smart Heating Switch allows smart control of a single heating system component.

The Honeywell Home Wireless Radiator Valve and Wireless Thermostat work seamlessly with the Lightwave Link Plus, which is required to control these devices through the Lightwave App or voice command. The Lightwave App allows you to monitor, control and schedule these devices and use them to control your radiators.

So there you have it, with the winter fast approaching, now is the time to incorporate the fantastic benefits of smart heating into your home.
